Airyx Enables High‑Resolution Real‑World Emission Measurements in New Plume‑Chasing Study

A new peer‑reviewed study published in Science of the Total Environment (2026) demonstrates the power of high‑resolution Plume Chasing for determining real‑world vehicle emissions. Airyx contributed key measurement data, enabling large‑scale screening of cars, buses and trucks under real driving conditions in Czechia.

The study analysed emissions from more than 1,400 vehicles, including light‑duty cars, urban buses and heavy‑duty trucks. Real‑world emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), particle number (PN) and black carbon (BC) were quantified directly on the road, providing insights into fleet behaviour beyond controlled laboratory testing.

Identifying high‑emitting vehicles in the real world

A central finding of the study is the disproportionate impact of a small number of vehicles on total emissions. Depending on pollutant and vehicle category, only a few percent of the fleet accounted for around half of overall emissions. This clearly underlines the value of real‑world screening methods for rapidly identifying high emitters.

Comparison of remote sensing and Plume Chasing

For the first time, multiple remote emission sensing techniques were directly compared with high‑resolution Plume Chasing in urban traffic. Measurements were performed at co‑located sites using different remote‑sensing setups, complemented by Portable Emission Measurement Systems (PEMS) on selected vehicles.

While average emission factors across the remote‑sensing methods were broadly comparable, individual vehicle results showed substantial variability depending on technique and measurement interval. Plume Chasing exhibited the smallest deviation from PEMS, likely due to longer observation times and coverage of varying engine loads, capturing real driving behaviour more accurately.

Why high‑precision Plume Chasing matters

The results highlight the importance of high‑resolution and high‑precision measurements for realistic emission assessment. Short sampling intervals and unstable plume capture can lead to large uncertainties for individual vehicles. By dynamically tracking exhaust plumes over extended periods, Plume Chasing reduces these uncertainties and delivers emission factors that better reflect true on‑road performance.

These findings underline the value of Airyx mobile emission measurement technology for urban environments. Continuous plume capture supports fleet screening, regulatory monitoring and research applications where robustness and real‑world representativeness are critical.

About the study

The study was conducted by an international consortium of universities and research organisations across Europe. It represents one of the most comprehensive evaluations of Plume Chasing and remote emission sensing to date and demonstrates the potential of high‑resolution mobile measurements to identify emission hotspots, support enforcement and improve understanding of fleet‑level emissions.

Airyx Presents the WGA020 Wastewater Gas Analyser at IFAT 2026

The Airyx WGA020 wastewater gas analyser will be showcased at IFAT 2026, demonstrating real-time monitoring of N₂O, CH₄, CO₂ and O₂ for wastewater treatment applications.

Airyx will exhibit at IFAT 2026, the leading global trade fair for water and wastewater technologies in Munich. The event brings together operators, engineers and environmental specialists seeking reliable solutions for process control and greenhouse-gas monitoring. At the Airyx stand, visitors can explore the WGA020 wastewater gas analyser and discuss its capabilities with the Airyx team.

The WGA020 provides high‑precision, continuous measurements of N₂O, CH₄, CO₂ and O₂ and automatically calculates net emission rates using an integrated total‑flow sensor. These real-time insights support process optimisation, emission reduction strategies and compliance with reporting requirements in wastewater treatment plants.

Airyx staff will present and explain the full measurement principle, including how basin‑level emissions are captured and how the analyser converts concentration data into robust flux estimates. The demonstration will also cover sampling strategies, background-air referencing and best‑practice installation methods for treatment facilities.

The WGA020 uses NDIR spectroscopy for N₂O, CH₄ and CO₂ and an electrochemical sensor for O₂, supported by sample-air drying, cross‑interference correction and temperature‑stabilised sensor housing. Its rugged IP64 enclosure and gas‑bottle‑free operation make the system ideal for long-term outdoor deployments.

Visitors attending IFAT are invited to meet the Airyx team, learn about practical applications of the Airyx WGA020 wastewater gas analyser and discuss integration into their own facilities. Further information about the exhibition is available on the official IFAT website: ifat.de

Identification of high emitting heavy duty vehicles using Plume Chasing: European case study for enforcement.

Our peer-reviewed paper is now published and freely available!

Read it here: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scitotenv.2025.179844
This is our publication and our technology — showcasing the real-world performance of our Plume Chasing measurement system, developed specifically for on-road emission detection of heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs).

Our system was used in multiple European countries between 2016 and 2023, measuring nearly 5,000 HDVs for NOx, with solid particle number (PN) and black carbon (BC) emissions measured for over 1100 vehicles.

Key capabilities of our Plume Chasing solution:
Real-time, on-road emission measurements
Automatic classification of suspect and high emitters within seconds
Seamless support for on-site enforcement actions
Proven accuracy and reliability, confirmed through vehicle inspections by authorities

Proven impact:
In Czechia and Slovakia Plume Chasing flagged up to 41% of HDVs as high emitters.
Follow-up inspections revealed tampering, defects, or malfunctioning emission systems.
Just 4–14% of the worst vehicles cause over 50% of particle pollution in HDV fleets.
Countries with strong enforcement and regular use of our technology (like Denmark) showed dramatic improvements in fleet cleanliness.

The message is clear:
Our Plume Chasing system enables fast, efficient, and targeted emissions enforcement. Authorities can use the Airyx Plume Chasing system to act on data in real time — identifying the worst polluters on the spot, without the need for expensive lab testing or random stops.

We encourage environmental agencies, transport ministries, and enforcement bodies across Europe and beyond to implement this powerful tool. The technology is ready, proven, and making a measurable difference.

RESEARCH PROJECT SEICOR – MONITORING SHIP EMISSIONS

The aim of this research project is the development of a flexibly deployable measuring instrument for the operational monitoring of sulfur and nitrogen oxide emission factors (SO₂ and NOₓ per engine power or per emitted CO₂) in maritime shipping in accordance with the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) within so-called “Emission Control Areas” (ECAs), as well as for monitoring compliance with NOₓ emission factors in inland waterway shipping. By monitoring compliance with regulations, a level playing field in the shipping industry can be ensured. Thanks to minimal logistical requirements, the system will cover a wide range of applications and can be used within port areas as well as flexibly on riverbanks, e.g., for monitoring the compliance of incoming and outgoing vessels with emission regulations. The data obtained hold great potential and will serve as a basis for optimizing port operations and maritime traffic nodes with regard to energy efficiency and economic viability, environmental protection, and sustainability.
